KYIV, Ukraine – More than 500 localities in Ukraine were left without power on Sunday after weeks of Russian airstrikes on the power grid, an Interior Ministry official said.
“The enemy continues to attack critical infrastructure in the country. Currently, 507 settlements in eight regions of our country are cut off from electricity,” Deputy Interior Minister Yevgeny Yenin told Ukrainian television.
“Kharkiv region is the most affected with 112 isolated villages,” Yenin added.
Another 90 villages were isolated in Donetsk and Kherson regions, he said, with others in Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia and Lugansk regions.
On Saturday, Ukrainian authorities – including Mykolaiv region governor Vitali Kim – had once again urged civilians to show perseverance in the face of continuing deteriorating conditions in the onset of winter and regular power cuts. .
Repeated daily power outages have left millions of people without heat or lighting as outside temperatures have fallen below zero Celsius (32 Fahrenheit) in recent days.
While further strikes on the network are widely expected, Ukrainians fear a prolonged harsh winter as well as a flood of refugee departures from a war now in its tenth month.
Private Ukrainian energy operator DTEK said on Thursday that nearly half of Ukraine’s electricity grid remained damaged after Russia began targeting Ukrainian energy facilities in October following a series of humiliating military defeats on the ground.
