A mother seeks advice after an argument with her ex-husband over their daughter’s weight.
The mother wants to send her overweight daughter to a sports camp aimed at helping her reach a healthy weight.
However, her ex-husband objects to the idea, believing they are sending the wrong message to their daughter by sending her to a ‘fat camp’.
She wants to send her daughter to a sports camp that will help her maintain her weight after gaining a lot following her parents’ divorce.
Posting her story on the subreddit, r/AmItheA–hole, the woman asked other Redditors if she was wrong in her decision.
She started her post by revealing that her 14-year-old daughter Abby, who she shares with her ex-husband, just hit 210 pounds.
The teenager gained a lot of weight when the woman’s divorce from her ex-husband was finalized.
“Growing up Abby was always a middleweight until we separated custody,” the woman wrote.
While the woman and her ex were still married, she shared that she did most of the shopping and cooking for the family to ensure they had a balanced diet.
She admits Abby struggled with the divorce, but started going to therapy where she seemed to be doing well.
Her weight increased when she started going to her father’s house half the time.
“At first I just thought he was gaining weight before a growth spurt, but he wasn’t,” the woman wrote.
She claimed her ex-husband only fed their daughter ‘junk food’ when she stayed with him.
“He doesn’t cook and to make matters worse he lives if you eat him on your plate,” the woman wrote. “So in short, it gives way to big servings of shit.”
The woman spoke to her ex-husband about the issue and asked if he could give their daughter smaller portions, but she says he “won’t budge”.
In an attempt to manage Abby’s weight, the woman involved her in sports.
“She loves it most of the time, but it’s not enough to stop the weight gain,” she wrote.
The concerned mother spoke to a doctor and a nutritionist about Abby’s weight gain, who both blamed it on the woman’s ex-husband who gave her an unhealthy amount of food.
Running out of options, the woman decided to send Abby to soccer camp on the days she had to stay with her dad to control her weight.
“Abby seemed fine with the idea and that way her dad won’t be feeding her or even really seeing her for the next two months,” the woman wrote.
Although when the wife told her ex-husband about Abby being sent to camp, he disagreed with the decision.
“It was a big argument that he swirled around her weight. He accused me of sending her to fat camp,” the woman explained.
She added that she was talking to lawyers about changing their custody agreement so she can track Abby’s weight to ensure she stays healthy.
Many Redditors approved of the woman’s decision and criticized her ex-husband for what he was doing to their daughter.
“What the father is doing is abusive. force a child to overeat,” one user pointed out. “If he doesn’t give in, I suggest you work with doctors and lawyers and have the custody changed so he doesn’t create lasting health issues for your child.”
“He’s also wrong to call soccer camp a ‘fat camp’,” another user commented. “It’s great that the OP [original poster] has found an activity that her daughter enjoys and is also a healthy way to become more active.
“My first thought when I read the title was ‘yikes!’ but Abby loves sports and it’s not even a ‘big camp’ so if she wants to go that should be all that matters,” another user added.
